Ocean Depth Zones & Rarity Scoring — How to Dive Deeper to 7,000m

In The Endless Dive, your score isn’t just an abstract number—every point translates directly into 10 meters of bathymetric descent through Earth’s five pelagic ocean layers. Learn how the rarity algorithm works and simulate your 7-round trajectory below.

1. Epipelagic Zone (The Sunlight Zone)

Plankton Tier (+100m to +250m / round) 1 – 21 ATM

DEPTH BAND: 0m – 200m (In-Game: 0m – 1,400m Cumulative)

In oceanography, the Epipelagic zone receives enough solar radiation for photosynthesis. In The Endless Dive, naming the first textbook answer that pops into your head—like Oxygen, Mars, California, or Hamlet—keeps your bathysphere floating in this sunlit surface layer.

REPRESENTATIVE ANSWERS: Oxygen (O), Earth, California (CA), Kilo, English, Hamlet

2. Mesopelagic Zone (The Twilight Zone)

Schooler Tier (+350m to +500m / round) 21 – 101 ATM

DEPTH BAND: 200m – 1,000m (In-Game: 1,400m – 3,150m Cumulative)

Sunlight fades into faint blue bioluminescence below 200 meters, where lanternfish and schooling squid migrate vertically. Answers in the Schooler tier represent secondary mainstream knowledge: still widely taught, but skipped by the fastest surface guessers.

REPRESENTATIVE ANSWERS: Argon (Ar), Saturn, Colorado (CO), Giga, Spanish, Macbeth

3. Bathypelagic Zone (The Midnight Zone)

Rare Tier (+650m to +750m / round) 101 – 401 ATM

DEPTH BAND: 1,000m – 4,000m (In-Game: 3,150m – 4,900m Cumulative)

Pitch-black waters at 4°C inhabited by giant squid, anglerfish, and vampire squid. Reaching the Rare tier requires deliberately bypassing obvious answers and recalling mid-list entries before the 25-second oxygen clock expires.

REPRESENTATIVE ANSWERS: Xenon (Xe), Uranus, Minnesota (MN), Peta, King Lear, Philippine Trench

4. Abyssopelagic Zone (The Abyss)

Deep Cut Tier (+850m to +900m / round) 401 – 601 ATM

DEPTH BAND: 4,000m – 6,000m (In-Game: 4,900m – 6,300m Cumulative)

Covering over 80% of the ocean floor, the Abyssal plain is near-freezing and under crushing hydrostatic pressure. Deep Cut answers are specialist edge cases that fewer than 5% of quiz players recall under time pressure.

REPRESENTATIVE ANSWERS: Radon (Rn), Vanadium (V), Delaware (DE), Ronna, Titus Andronicus, Kermadec Trench

5. Hadalpelagic Zone (The 7,000m Hadal Trench)

Krillion Tier (+1,000m / 100 Points per round) 601 – 701+ ATM

DEPTH BAND: 6,000m – 11,000m (In-Game Target: 7,000m Floor)

Named after Hades, the Hadalpelagic zone exists exclusively inside deep oceanic subduction trenches like the Mariana, Tonga, and Kuril-Kamchatka trenches. Scoring 100 points (+1,000m) across all 7 rounds brings your submersible to the ultimate 7,000m Hadal milestone.

REPRESENTATIVE ANSWERS: Oganesson (Og), Tennessine (Ts), Quecto, Candela, Tuvalu, Montpelier, Timon of Athens

Why does mainstream knowledge keep you near the surface? Because 80% of players type the first textbook example that comes to mind under the 25-second clock.
